I felt a whole new experience when I step foot at Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. Everything is new to me. It felt like I have entered a beginning of a whole new life. You get a chance to meet lots and lots of people you’ve never met before. I was afraid that I can’t make any new friends and have to be a loner, and i am so anxious about academics. I keep having the thought that I will be hammered during the first week.
Many students who entered college are expecting new friendships, more time, and whole lot of fun! It isn’t actually mostly like that because college comes with challenges, great demands and expectations that are put on the importance of education.
I found it relatively easy to decide which Bachelor’s Degree I should take, it was where to have it finished which I found harder to decide. For almost three years now, Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba has been my home to finish my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. Before I became I Letran Knight, that’s what we call ourselves, I was once a Lycean (Lyceum of the Philippines -Laguna) and a Perpetualite (University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Calamba Campus).
During my first year of stay in Letran, I kinda had a hard time meeting new friends since I am an irregular student. I have a different schedule and my classmates were from different programs. I’ve no permanent buddy to be with but that’s actually fine with me. In addition to that, I am blessed with a young looking face that I do not look like I’m 20 years old at that time. I most often be mistaken as a freshman not a new-comer which was actually good.
In the previous universities I have been, I am an active member of a Theater organization. I still don’t know why I did not even attempt to join. I found out Letran offers talent enhancing and leadership organizations that could enhance and showcase students’ talents.
Also, I noticed that I am not so grade conscious unlike before that I really do my best to excel and belong to the Dean’s List. Hey I was the First Honorable Mention back when I graduated in Grade School and High School. I guess College is a lot more different now or I just lost the hunger for high grades. Whatever it is, as long as I am having fun and not failing a subject, I am actually good with it.
As the months passed by I was pretty stressed out with too much work and it would be easy if I have friends. I gained amazing friends who are there to help me and make a serious effort to be in my life and get to know each other. I can get by everyday and be inspired to work with academics. I’m on the ebb of adjustment since I’m a transferee but I was quite surprised about the people here in Letran, they are very kind, easy to get along with, and were very friendly.
I am really enjoying the program Bachelor of Arts In Communication and I am so proud about it! Though a lot of people are underestimating this program because of the misconceptions that Communication students are just all about being good in English, or to be a Celebrity, Broadcaster/Journalist, I can somehow attest those are fallacies. It will require you a lot of art and dedication. It’s all about passion and love for the work that we have.
I am constantly learning new things and I hope to learn and get to know more about this field. Although I took the same program from my previous universities, this experience of being a Communication Student in Letran is a whole lot more different. They might not have the best facilities and laboratories for Communication students but the quality of education and the professors are way much better.
During my internship at Wave 89.1 FM in Manila, when they found out that I’m from Letran, most of them were like “Arriba Letran? Arriba Letran!” Even the visitors who are foreigners also know that Letran is the home of the Knights. Wow, I am so proud about it!
Here in Letran, it is not all about academics. There are student organizations too which you can join to enhance your skills. Also, they throw cool college parties too which one should not miss! I like it when it’s the University Week. All the departments gather and compete with each other for a friendly match. I once joined the cheer leading for our department. It did not went well, I admit but the experience was a whole lot of fun. I might join again since it’s gonna be my last year in college.
I’m really enjoying my stay here in Letran and for my (hopefully) last year in this prestigious institution, i’ll surely miss this place. It’s not just a venue for education but also a home wherein students and faculty treat each other as family members. In addition to that, Letran is a place where you can grow and prepare you in the corporate world through its holistic environment.
It took me awhile to finally come to my senses. I’ve learned a lot in building the person whom I am today and I am thankful that my parents sent me to Letran which helped me in reaching my ambitions in life.
Now, I finally realized that if you’re not interested in something doesn’t mean you’ll be good at it, but if you’re good at something you can teach yourself to love it. I’ve learned that you have to be able to work with different kinds of people and never ever lose patience understanding them.
I will do my best to achieve my goals and graduate on the 31st of March 2015! I see myself in a dynamic way to be more matured and a better person in this world. I am a proud Letran Knight.
